Rubys of London, Greenwich market

I found Rubys of London through Google as I’ve been looking for a place that does vegan and gluten-free wedding cakes for my wedding in September. Rubys is completely vegan, but also specialises in gluten-free cakes; from the website the cakes looked both very pretty and extremely professional, which seems a relatively rare combination in free from cakes so I was keen to see them in person. We went down to their stall in Greenwich which is open on Saturday and Sunday to get a better idea of whether their cakes would be suitable or not. About half of their products were gluten-free and marked with green name cards, so we bought one of most of them, for research purposes obviously. Their cinnamon doughnut was light and fluffy, the triple chocolate brownie dense and fudgey and the triple chocolate cupcake was light and very chocolatey (as the name would suggest). The best two bakes were the strawberry and white chocolate cupcake and the chocolate cake slice. The chocolate cake slice is a piece of one of the cakes we’re looking at having for the wedding and it was one of the best chocolate cakes either of us have ever had. It was moist and light and not too sweet. The ladies at the stall were lovely and very helpful and we’ll definitely be back to try out more cakes and perhaps give the Spitalfields market stall a go too.

Cookies and Scream, Camden

I’ve already blogged about Cookies and Scream in Camden, but it definitely needs to make an appearance in my places recommendations too. This was the first gluten-free vegan bakery I found and is still the best. They do pies, cakes, brownies, blondies, brownie-cookies, brownie-marshmallows, cookies, cookie ice cream sandwiches, doughnuts, doughnut ice cream sandwiches, milkshakes and much more.. If you want baked goods and can’t be bothered to bake, this is the place to come. They bake everything fresh every day and once they’re gone, they’re gone; but it’s always worth keeping an eye on their Instagram if there’s something specific you’re after and can get there quickly. The most common complaint about Cookies and Scream on Tripadvisor is the occasionally surly service, but I think the staff just like to get on with it as they’re always busy. My partner did manage to irritate them once by requesting ‘tea with normal milk’ and they quickly pointed out that the bar is vegan, but he’s learnt his lesson and the girls have always seemed polite and friendly enough ever since, so don’t let any of those review put you off trying it.
